Art Yarn Scarf: Chunky Hand Knit shipping Scarf with Lock-spun Art Yarn - Raspberry, Ice Blue and Pink - Fringed - Wool and Alpaca
This is my favorite scarf pattern and I love finding.
This is my favorite scarf pattern, and I love finding new, fun yarns, to knit it. Since I'm a spinner too, I love finding yarns with new spinning techniques - this is lock-spun shipping yarn. That means that when the wool is sheared from the sheep, it's not combed or carded. Instead the locks of wool are kept intact while they are washed and dyed different colors, and then they're attached to the yarn while it's being spun, so you can see the sheen and the structure of the original wool. Since I get to see the original wool as a spinner, I can tell you that there are many times I wish we could just wear the wool *without* having to spin it. I love that there's a spinning technique that lets you preserve some of that beauty. I didn't spin this yarn myself - I wanted to experiment first, and see if I loved the final result as much as I thought I would. And I do. So somewhere on my never-ending to-do list is learn how to lock spin yarn so I can make my own. The lock spun yarn is all from the same skeins, but there is some variation in the colors, so each scarf is unique.
It's impossible to make lock-spun yarn in a factory - each lock of yarn must be carefully incorporated into the yarn during the spinning process. So it's much more labor-intensive, and it's why this scarf costs a bit more than the others. Truly an artisanal item.
If you've bought my scarves before, you know that my yarn is very soft. But this is an exception. The locks in this particular yarn are not as soft. If you are someone who is used to wearing wool, then there shouldn't be a problem. But not for someone who has very sensitive skin.
The pattern for this scarf is available in this listing, if you have some beautiful yarn you'd like to knit up for yourself:
