Victorian Cameo Brooch - Demeter Ceres

A wonderful antique late Victorian / early Edwardian pink milk glass cameo brooch set in a gold shell shipping mount. Featured is the classical goddess of the harvest and fertility, Demeter (as she was known to the Romans) or Ceres (as she was known to the Greeks). She's distinctive with her fancy hair dress While it was produced around the world for thousands of years prior to this time, by the mid-1800s milk glass had many fans in America. Most of the manufacturers in the United States at that time were concentrated in Eastern Pennsylvania. The peak of popularity was 1895-1910, according to The Collector's Encyclopedia of Milk Glass by Bill and Betty Newbound (now out of print).

Brooch measures 1 3/8" in width by 1 1/2" in height, and closes with ball hinge and "c" clasp closure. Back is stamped "Gold Shell". This piece dates from the late Victorian era. Good vintage condition.
