The Ecclesiastical Legal System: The Christian Church in Anglo-Saxon Britain was determined to promote faith in Jesus Christ and improve the moral standards of the Angles. the Saxons and the pagan Britons. In its endeavours the Church exercised a strange mixture of ecclesiastical law from Charlemagne's time combined with secular law which the bishops (and archbishops) and the temporal Judges administered side by side. Ecclesiastical law comprised four essential elements: civil law, canon law, common law and statute law, though some regard civil law as being part of canon law.
